"Better access to and availability of parking for the Royal Surrey County Hospital was something I campaigned on during the 2019 election. Health minister Edward Argar visited the site in 2020 before lockdown to discuss this among other issues.
"I am so pleased that will now become a reality after a planning application to provide nearly 600 new parking spaces just next to the hospital site was approved by Guildford Borough Council last night. Thank you to all the councillors who supported it - it will make a real difference to so many staff and users of the hospital site.
"I do understand the comments that were made about the appearance of the building and the reasons why nearby residents were not happy with the proposals. But having dealt with casework for many users of the hospital and heard about some of the dreadful experiences with the current lack of parking - as well as been put through several myself - the committee took the correct decision in planning and practical terms. Not being able to park when you are stressed about a health appointment and what it may bring can be very upsetting.
"In another good news story, outline permission for a new cancer centre at RSCH was also granted, a facility that will benefit the whole of the area by providing more capacity for rapid diagnosis and treatment of that terrible disease. I'd like to thank Jeremy Hunt for the huge amount of work he has put into campaigning for this centre."
