It was great to be joined by Laura Trott MP, Chief Secretary to the Treasury, at Bright Horizons’ Day Nursery and Preschool by the Surrey Sports Park.
We met staff who kindly gave Laura and I a tour, where we met many of the children who were being looked after and supervised.
Afterwards, Laura and I met Ros Marshall, the Managing Director of Bright Horizons, to discuss childcare eligibility criteria for parents, and what more the government is doing to support parents with childcare. When we spoke to staff, we were pleased to learn that there were no waiting lists for the nursery, which is great news for parents of children working or studying at the University of Surrey in Guildford.
During our visit, we also met Emily Farran, a Professor in Developmental Psychology at the University of Surrey, who discussed the importance of gaining mathematics skills at an early age and the correlation this has with developing spatial awareness.
Her area of study is fascinating and more information about Prof. Farran’s work can be found here, if this is of interest to parents.
Thank you to Laura for visiting Guildford and to the staff and children at Bright Horizons for having us.
