November 2023
Dear Constituent,
Thank you for contacting me about the prospect of the release of Robert Brown.
This was an appalling crime and my thoughts remain with Joanna Simpson's family and friends. I am aware that Robert Brown was due to be automatically freed on license in November. However, I welcome that the Secretary of Justice has used new powers which means Mr. Brown will remain in prison and instead be referred to the Parole Board to decide if he is safe to be released. The referral was made under "power to detain" provisions, which are designed to protect the public from dangerous offenders if they present a significant risk of causing serious harm which cannot be safely managed through usual licence conditions.
I can assure you that the Government is committed to protecting the public from the most dangerous offenders.
I will continue to monitor this issue closely.
Thank you again for taking the time to contact me.
Best wishes,
Angela Richardson MP
